Since 1912, the British Board Classification has been
classifying cinema films. It has also been classifying DVD’s and videos since
1984.
Cinema
The organisation was set up to bring a degree of uniformity
to the classification of film nationally. Although this organisation has been set up, the local
councils may still overrule the BBFC’s decisions, like passing films that they
reject, or banning films they deem acceptable.
Finances
The BBFC is a not for profit organisation, its fees are adjusted to cover is required
costs. The BBFC has never received subsidies from either the government or film
industry in order to preserve its independence.
